Cream of Passion

The Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 oz Coconut Cream

  • 1.5 oz passion fruit syrup

  • 1 oz lime juice

  • 5 oz soda water

  • Nutmeg

  • ice

Tools

  • Cocktail Shaker

  • Collins Glass or Rocks Glass

Instructions

  1. Put Coconut cream, passion fruit syrup, lime juice, and ice in cocktail shaker

  2. Shake for 40 seconds and pour into the glass over ice

  3. Fill the rest with soda water

  4. Sprinkle nutmeg powder over the top

  5. Drink and enjoy!

Tips & Tricks

Passion Fruit Syrup: There are a lot of options you can find on Amazon if your local liquor store doesn’t have a great selection of cocktail syrups. The one linked is the version I can find at Total Wine for around $7.

Coconut Cream: More common to find in a liquor store or even grocery store is cream of coconut for cocktails.

Cocktail Shaker: You will definitely need to use a cocktail shaker (or equivalent thing) for this one. Between the coconut cream and fruit juices the shaker is what helps break it up and mixes it together. If you don’t have a shaker you can put it all into a jar with an airtight lid. Shake it for a bit and then you can pour it into a glass from the jar.

Nutmeg: Nutmeg is optional but my spouse and I think this is what ties this drink together! It also is what makes me able to call it a zero-proof version of a painkiller.

Substitutions: If you can’t find passion fruit syrup or you don’t like it you can use the same recipe but substitute orange juice for the passion fruit syrup. You might need to play with the proportions as the orange juice won’t be as thick as the syrup would be.

The Story

I actually started this one as a riff off the Passion Fruit Batida so it might be more accurate to call this a zero proof of that but when I added the nutmeg the overall flavor reminded me and my spouse more of a Painkiller than the Passion Fruit Batida. The fun thing about making zero-proof drinks is looking at what things you have on hand and then how to give it enough flavor and body to make a full drink. This one was pretty easy as I already had all the ingredients to make the Batida and Painkiller so I did some experiments with portions and this is the result!
