Tips & Tricks

Pinot Grigio: I’ll be honest, I grabbed a $8 bottle of pinot grigio that was recommended to me by a worker at Total Wine. Any dry white wine should work but this is what I used and it turned out delightful!

Passion Fruit Juice: I used Ceres Passion Fruit juice that I found at my local grocery store. It’s a South African Juice brand that is also available at World Market and it does look like it’s available on Amazon!

Let Sit in Fridge: It is absolutely essential for a sangria to sit and absorb the fruit into it and let all the flavors come together. When I tasted this right after I mixed it together I thought it was too sweet and didn’t much care for it. Then after it sat for 24 hours I drank it and LOVED IT. Please, please, let it sit and become SO much better.

Brandy: I used a basic E&J Brandy that is a mid-range brandy of a decent price that you can find in most liquor stores.

Frozen Fruit: I use frozen fruit in my sangrias for a few reasons. The first one is that it’s easier to get and then save the extra not used in the mixture. Especially, the passion fruit is difficult to find and then you’d need to strain it if you used real fruit. I found the frozen passion fruit at target and it ended up dissolving into the mixture and creating this absolute delightful flavor in the sangria.

Simple Syrup: You can buy simple syrup in the store OR if you don’t already know how to make your own it is super easy and much cheaper. Combine 1 part water and 1 part sugar (i.e. a cup of water to a a cup of sugar) on a pot over the stove. Heat up until the sugar dissolves and then store in an airtight container in the fridge. Usually lasts about a week.

The Story

I’ve been on a quest for a while for a good white wine sangria and finally decided to try and make my own! Online gave me such varied recipes for a white sangria that I wasn’t sure what direction to go in. Most seemed to not use brandy in them (while most red sangrias do use brandy) so I dithered over what to use as the secondary alcohol.

So, I went to Total Wine and tasted a few white wines at their tasting counter and then asked for a recommendation for a white wine for a white sangria. The very helpful worker directed me to a Pinot Grigio and told me they just used straight brandy (and not a flavored one). Deciding to follow this path and add flavor through the fruit, I got the Pinot Grigio and then went to Target to look at Frozen fruit options.

When I found the frozen passion fruit I immediately knew I had to try it in the sangria. Passion fruit is my absolute favorite fruit to add to drinks. I use it constantly in cocktails and for my flavored sparkling water. I already had passion fruit juice on hand so decided to forgo the usual lemon juice in a sangria and substitute the passion fruit juice.

I also had a bag of frozen pineapple and strawberry on hand and decided to add them to get some of the acidity from the pineapple since I hadn’t added the lemon juice.

The result was AMAZING. I only used one bottle and both my spouse and I wished I’d doubled the recipe. We will definitely be making this often in the future!
